The COALAR Australia Latin America Young Entrepreneur Award
Established for the first time in December 2016, the award aims to recognize the achievements of a young Latin American and a young Australian.
The candidates, who should be nominated, must lead a project that is capable of improving the life of Australian and Latin American people, fostering the cultural, economic, environmental, technological or academic prosperity.
In this line, the candidates should be able to demonstrate that through their contribution and commitment to a project, the relationship between Australia and Latin America has been enriched.
The Australian Government will facilitate these projects with access to a governmental, corporate and academic network that will help them to gain visibility and support.
The award sponsors are Air New Zealand and the Australian Technology Network of Universities (ATN). This network includes the following universities: University of Technology Sydney, RMIT University, University of South Australia, Queensland University of Technology and Curtin University.
The awardees have been selected from a significant pool of projects led by Australian and Latin American entrepreneurs.
The award ceremony
The award recipients were announced by Mr. Chris Gale, COALAR chairman, on Monday 22nd May 2017 in Melbourne, Australia, in the context of the “Latin America Infrastructure Forum 2017” networking reception hosted by the Australia-Latin America Business Council (ALABC). The reception took place in the Victoria Government’s Investment Centre premises.
In the gala dinner held on May 23rd at the Sofitel Melbourne hotel, the Australian Government conferred the awards to the selected entrepreneurs.
Dr. Nicolás Gambetta was the entrepreneur selected to represent Latin America, and according to Mr. Chris Gale, he was selected “on recognition to his work in establishing the first Australian Studies Centre in Latin America at Universidad ORT Uruguay. The Australian Studies Centre (ASC) is recognized as a turning point in the Australia – Latin America relations and aims to strengthen the academic and cultural links between Australia and the region”.
Dr. Gambetta award nomination was done by the Uruguayan Ambassador to Australia, Ricardo Varela and the Australian Honorary Consul in Uruguay, Dr. Alfredo Taullard. Ryan Montgomery, Air New Zealand General Manager to New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory, presented the award to Dr. Gambetta in the gala dinner.
The Australian Government prepared a busy program for Dr. Gambetta during his Melbournian stay in the week starting the 22nd May. He held meetings with ATN, Monash University, University of Melbourne, Deakin University, RMIT University and Swinburne University.
Additionally, he was received by the COALAR board members during the COALAR board meeting in Melbourne and by the Victoria Government’s Department of Economic Development. Dr. Gambetta attended the Latin America Infrastructure Forum 2017 together with the Uruguayan delegation composed by Uruguay XXI, the Canelones Government and the Australian Honorary Consul in Uruguay.
