Official inauguration of the Australian Studies Centre

The Australian Studies Centre (ASC) official inauguration will take place at Universidad ORT Uruguay’s Pocitos Campus on November 24th, 2016, followed by a reception.

Date: 11/21/2016

This will be the first Australian Studies Centre in Latin America.

Noel Campbell, Australian ambassador to Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay, had announced on August 7th the creation of the ASC at a reception held in honour of Australia's Governor-General, Sir Peter Cosgrove, on his visit to Uruguay.

"This announcement was relevant since it formalized the launch of this Centre", said Dr Nicolás Gambetta, academic coordinator of postgraduate degrees in Accounting and Tax of the School of Management and Social Sciences, Universidad ORT Uruguay.

One of the main reasons for the creation of the ASC is to strengthen the relationship with Australia, where a large community of Uruguayans live.

The Centre has the founding support of the Australian company Petrel Energy, whose CEO, David Casey, visited Universidad ORT Uruguay and accompanied the ambassador's announcement.

There is a close relationship between the Uruguayan and the Australian society through the contingent of Uruguayans who live in Australia. The ASC aims to strengthen this link through different educational actions.

The main activities of the ASC will be the organization of lectures and seminars by academics, as well as cultural, political and economic references in Australia.

It will encourage exchanges of students and teachers, and will have scholarship plans to allow Uruguayan students to study in Australia, a country that has a university system of recognized quality.

The project will also promote the development of courses on Australia's history, economy, government, foreign policy, society, arts and sustainable development, and will carry out comparative research projects between Australia and the region.

Although the ASC will begin to function fully in 2017, proposals for activities are already emerging.
