Earth Science Expert, Professor Greg McNamara in Uruguay

The Australian Studies Centre (ASC), together with UNESCO’s International Geoscience and Geoparks Programme (IGGP) and Dinamige (National Board for Mining and Geology) organised a series of conferences on Earth Science education with ASC visiting Professor Greg McNamara.

Professor McNamara presented his experience on educational tools and research state of the art for Earth Science, with the main Conference “Earth Science and its Relevance in Society” held at Universidad ORT Uruguay. His agenda also included conferences and seminars at the Universidad de Buenos Aires (UBA) – Geology Department and also in the Sociedad Científica Argentina.

McNamara is a member of IGEO Council (International Geoscience Education Organisation) and Director of the “Earth and Environmental Science Olympiad” program, from Australian Science Innovations, promoted by the ANU (Australian National University).

ASC’s main objectives

ASC’s main objectives

  • To organize conferences, seminars and roundtables about Australian current issues and their relationship with the region.

  • To promote overseas study and student exchange programs.

  • To promote academic cooperation with Australian universities, in particular faculty exchange programs and activities in support of the Uruguayan postgraduate system.

  • To develop courses on Australian history, politics, international relations, economics, business, society, education, culture, literature, sustainability and environmental topics.

  • To develop comparative research projects between Australia and the region.

More than 30 students from the University of New England (UNE) from Armidale Australia, and a group of four faculty members visited Uruguay in June 2018 on an agriculture studies ground tour.

On June 20th 2018, Chris Gale, Chairman at COALAR (Council for Australia and Latin America Relations) from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) visited the Australian Studies Centre, having met with Board Members and Executive Team.

On Friday 9 March 2018 we received the visit of Cathy Raper, Head of Europe and Latin America Engagement at the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) of Australia.
