ASC Board Meeting

The Australian Studies Centre (ASC) was officially launched at Universidad ORT on the 24th November 2016. A successful start was followed by the first Board Meeting held on the 2nd March 2017 at ORT, where most members attended the meeting both, onsite and remotely.

During the meeting the main KAS were presented and approved by the Board Members, as well as the objectives and upcoming activities for 2017. For the initial term, the ASC activities will be mainly focused on the following key areas of studies that are of mutual interest for Uruguay and Australia: Agriculture, Biotechnology, Sustainable Development, Tax, Fintech, Natural Resources, Audit, Financial Literacy, Research Methods and Data Analysis.

In the upcoming months the ASC will be working with our Australian counterparts and receiving visiting Professors, working on research papers, workshops and conferences for students, faculty and government, and identifying opportunities for future studies and funding.

The ASC is proud to announce the visit of Professor Colin Barrow, Chair of Biotechnology from Deakin University, on the 23rd May, in an intense week working together with Dr. Lorena Betancor and her team at ORT. This event will be followed by the visit of Associate Professor Thiomir Ancev from the School of Economics, Agriculture and Resources Economics at The University of Sydney, on the Week starting 12th June, working with Dr Francisco Rosas from the School of Management and Social Sciences at ORT.

All members agreed that the ASC should focus on achieving the KAS objectives, and gain visibility by strengthening the academic and cultural links between Australia and the region.

ASC’s main objectives

ASC’s main objectives

  • To organize conferences, seminars and roundtables about Australian current issues and their relationship with the region.

  • To promote overseas study and student exchange programs.

  • To promote academic cooperation with Australian universities, in particular faculty exchange programs and activities in support of the Uruguayan postgraduate system.

  • To develop courses on Australian history, politics, international relations, economics, business, society, education, culture, literature, sustainability and environmental topics.

  • To develop comparative research projects between Australia and the region.

On Friday 9 March 2018 we received the visit of Cathy Raper, Head of Europe and Latin America Engagement at the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) of Australia.

Dr Francisco Rosas, one of ASC research colleagues, was invited to AARES Annual Conference to present his paper on “The effect of irrigation on income volatility reduction: A prospect theory approach”.

In December 2017 the ASC received the visit of Ms Natalie Collard, Board Member of COALAR, the Council for Australian and Latin-American Relations.
